Who we are / Quienes somos

The End Apartment Warehousing Coalition has just joined forces with the Stand for Tenant Safety

So our organization is now even bigger than the End Apartment Warehousing Coalition, which included:

with the support of

We want the owners of affordable apartments in New York State and elsewhere to rent them out - and not just warehouse them.

  • Keeping those apartments empty often endangers tenants still living in adjoining apartments - by letting the vacant apartments become dumps and fire hazards.
  • And keeping those apartments empty means that the 90,000 or so homeless people in New York State (the bulk of whom are in New York City as we are), have even fewer places to live.
We won (!) both a state regulation and a state statute to limit rent increases for combined ("Frankensteined" apartments), and we are waiting for implementation of Local Law 1 of 2024 to keep tenants safe in buildings where many apartments are warehoused - by requiring inspections of those apartments to ensure they are code compliant and not fire traps or harboring vermin, etc.  We want legislation to raise money for housing vouchers by taxing affordable apartments left vacant for long periods. We need housing for all - not just profits for a few.

If you agree with these goals, join us as a member organization or a support group, and participate in our meetings every two weeks.
